Ingenious Build Saves Months of Development Time with Dromo

Ingenious BUILD, a data platform for project management and construction administration, successfully streamlined their data onboarding process using Dromo, saving months of development time. Scrambling to handle data from large new customers, Ingenious Build decided to buy Dromo instead of building an in-house solution. With Dromo, they reduced the load on their developers and delivered a foolproof self-service importing experience for end users.

About Ingenious BUILD

Ingenious BUILD is an all-inclusive platform designed to promote collaboration between all project-team workspaces with real-time data. It serves architects, engineers, contractors, and owners with software for project financials, project management, and construction administration.

Ingenious Build is a project management and construction administration platform. With a team of hundreds of employees and seasoned developers across the US and Europe, they were used to building tools in-house. But when they won a huge new project to serve some of the largest construction companies in the world, they needed a data onboarding solution that would save them as many valuable minutes as possible.

Buying a solution vs building internally

Because of the immense amount of data we were using just for this one tool, it would have taken us months to write out what took us an hour to write out in Dromo.

– Josh Pulley, Software Engineer at Ingenious Build

Josh Pulley, a software engineer at Ingenious Build, initially looked into building the importer in-house. But the team decided against it due to the time and complexity involved. "Because of the immense amount of data we were using just for this one tool, it would have taken us months to write out what took us an hour to write out in Dromo," Josh explains. And while getting buy-in from Ingenious Build's many stakeholders for a new package or product is typically a Herculean effort, Josh made a demo video and got the green light to proceed with Dromo just three hours later.

Improving the developer experience

Not only was it easy, but the functionality just gives you, right out of the box, everything you need to make a good import tool.

– Josh Pulley

The value of Dromo didn't stop with the speedy prototype. The software provided ease and comprehensive functionality right out of the box. "Not only was it easy, but the functionality just gives you everything you need to make a good import tool." Josh adds. On the rare occasion that Dromo's extensive documentation didn't cover a particular aspect, the customer support team was always was always at the ready, responding within 24 hours.

In addition to saving the busy team months of dev time, Dromo reduced the load on the back end because developers didn't have to write custom logic. "I don't think there's a dev out there that enjoys that," laughs Josh. "Dromo cleans up everything. Developer quality of life is very important, and our experience when writing programs is if there's a tool out there that makes your life better, why reinvent the wheel? That's why Dromo is such a good tool. It lets us focus on what we really need to focus on, which is the logic of what we're doing with the data … It's just a time waster for us to do that other stuff."

Delivering a great self-service experience

Dromo keeps it locked down, so there's no way a user can make a mistake. That has to be the best part: knowing that the customer is going to be in good hands when they're trying to navigate this tool.

– Josh Pulley

For Josh, the best part of using Dromo is ensuring a seamless user experience for his customers. The familiar workbook-style UI guides the end user down the happy path, and provide gentle nudges to course-correct whenever there is an error. Dromo has also incorporated cutting-edge AI to help automate the boring work – like matching columns or performing bulk data transformations – on the user's behalf.

"That has to be the best part," reflects Josh. "Knowing that the customer is going to be in good hands when they're trying to navigate this tool." After implementing Dromo, Ingenious was able to onboard massive data sets from its large new customers easily without having to scale up the customer success or engineering team.
